Psychology Qualifying Practice Exam

Introspection as a systematic method for studying conscious experience helped usher in psychology as a science. Wilhelm Wundt is the figure most closely tied to this idea, because he established the first psychology laboratory and trained researchers to report their immediate experiences under controlled conditions. His approach treated mental processes as things that could be measured and analyzed in an experimental way, laying the foundation for experimental psychology and a lasting curiosity about how mental phenomena arise from experience.

Descartes is known for philosophical mind–body questions and self-scrutiny of thought, but not for founding psychology as an empirical science. Freud developed theories about the unconscious and clinical psychoanalysis rather than experimental introspection. St. Augustine explored inner life from a philosophical and theological angle but not within a scientific framework for studying psychological processes.
